Yes its that time of the year again, as bostin Brummie advocates BiNS set us the enjoyable task of voting for our favourite Brummie.

My vote last time when to the eventual winner John Tighe, the landlord of one of the finest boozers in our city – the Spotted Dog, who’s battle with the council and the developers embodied for many the clash between politics and commerce on one side and culture and community on the other.

This years event looks harder to pick, but my personal preferences are:

Little Chris of Brumcast – who has put together over 100 podcasts featuring music from Birmingham – any amazing feat.

Paul Murphy – also very active in boosting the Birmingham music scene – he ran the superb Songwriters Cafe for many years and lately has done some excellent work with The Destroyers and compered the Moseley Folk Festival to great effect.

But I think my vote must go to that indefatiguable paragon of live entertainment, the one and only Mrs Barbara Nice.

Babs was the compere (or com mere as she’s a Mother to us all) of our comedy club – the GAG Club for over ten years and has been seen geeing up the crowds in the most lively and lovable way at all sorts of other events such as Fierce launch parties, Artfest stages and so on. Her alter ego Janice Connolly also happens to be an amazing force – running theatre company Women and Theatre for many years (creating social change through drama) and appearing in TV shows such as Phoenix Nights and Corrie.
