I booked some Edinburgh Preview shows which are taking place at the lovely Old Joint Stock Theatre in Birmingham city centre this coming Tuesday and Wednesday (17th and 18th July), the following Tuesday and Wednesday (24th and 25th July) and Monday July 30th.

As you may well know, the Edinburgh Festival is the largest and very possibly the finest arts festival in the world. It encompasses a broad range of activity but has always been particularly known for the high quality of the stand up comedy it attacts.

This year I’ve booked in a selection of both local and national acts who are performing at the Festival in August to perform preview versions of their shows at the Joint Stock’s lovely little theatre space.

Each evening features two comics performing their full hour long shows, with an interval inbetween. Its a great opportunity to see what a really good comic can do when free of the contraints of doing a tight, crowd pleasing twenty minutes in a traditional comedy club setting.

Here’s some details on this week’s shows, with updates to follow on the rest.

Tuesday 17th July

Caimh McDonnell – a charming and genial Irish raconteur provides his take on the 150 bits of info that the government is apparently planning to cram about each one of us on our ID Cards. Join Caimh (pronounced Queeve by the way) on a journey through his own wallet to discover what truly defines him.

Mrs Barbara Nice – a local legend already thanks to a long and highly distinguished career as resident compere (or com mere) of Birmingham’s GAG Club and as hostess du jour of many other events such as Fierce Launch parties and ArtsFest and her award winning work under as an actress and playwright with Women and Theatre. In character as Barbara Nice, Janice Connolly has a truly remarkable gift for making audiences of any kind feel at home and welcome, and thoroughly entertained.

Wednesday 18th July

Andy White – another popular local act who is now a firm feature on the national comedy circuit – Andy has a affable comic demeanour which allows him to get away with the occasional foray into more random territory. This Edinburgh shows tells the intriguing tale of how he won an episode of The Weakest Link and was promptly awarded his prize – a wife.

Ivan Brackenbury – experienced Radio DJ, TV presenter and award winning gag writer Tom Binns puts his recent experiences as DJ on BRMB and Kerrang to good use in the creation of hilarious character Ivan Brackenbury who presents his Hospital Radio Roadshow. Disease-Hour captures the fun and excitement you’d expect from being ill in hospital with games, giveaways, patients’ requests and Ivan’s special blend of music and chat.

All shows start at 8pm and tickets are available either on the night, or by calling the Old Joint Stock Box Office on 0121 200 0946.
